Kelimutu Lake is one of Indonesia’s most popular tourist destinations. The lake is best known for its incredible views; on a clear day, visitors can see all three of the lake’s volcanic crater lakes, each with its own unique color. Unfortunately, the view from Kelimutu is often obscured by clouds, and many visitors leave disappointed. The lake is also home to a large population of chemosynthetic bacteria, which give the water its distinctive colors. While the view from Kelimutu may not be as breathtaking as some hope, it is still an incredible natural phenomenon.
