This island is home to a wide variety of snake species, including some of the most venomous snakes in the world. There’s no need to be afraid though – the island is perfectly safe to visit as long as you’re cautious. With an estimated 2,000 snakes per square kilometer, this is definitely the snake-infested destination you need to see!
Location
The Snake Island, also known as the Serpent Island, is located in the Black Sea off the coast of Ukraine. It is a small, uninhabited island measuring just over 2 square kilometers in size. The island got its name from the large number of snakes that call it home – there are an estimated 1,600 vipers on the island, which is more than one per square meter! While the snakes are not naturally aggressive, they are extremely venomous and can pose a serious threat to humans. As a result, the Ukrainian government has placed strict restrictions on access to the island and only allows scientific researchers to visit it. In recent years, the Ukrainian government has considered developing the island as a tourist destination, but this plan has been met with opposition from environmentalists.
Uninhabited?
The island is completely uninhabited by humans – although it is occasionally visited by scientists and snake enthusiasts as I said previously. There is no construction on the island, and the only man-made structures are a small lighthouse and snake-proof fencing that was erected around the perimeter to keep the snakes from swimming to mainland Ukraine.

The island is home to some of the most venomous snakes in the world, including the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake and the Inland Taipan. Visitors to the island should be cautious, as these snakes can be dangerous if they feel threatened. However, there are also many non-venomous snakes on the island, such as the Common Garter Snake and the Red-Bellied Snake. These snakes are not harmful to humans and can often be seen sunning themselves on rocks or in trees.
